Gillett jumper wins 2 events at Oshkosh invitational

Gillett Secondary School senior Akeem Bates propelled the Tigers to a fifth-place finish among 17 Division 3 schools Thursday at the Oshkosh High School Invitational on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. Bates won the long jump and triple jump for the Tigers in the indoor meet, which was won by Princeton/Green Lake. Suring placed seventh. Bates, who took ninth at state in the long jump in 2014, took first Thursday with a leap of 19 feet, 11 1/4 inches. His winning mark in the triple jump was 41 feet, 8.5 inches. Also finishing in the top five for Gillett were Matt Peterson, fourth in the 60-meter hurdles; Max Zeitler, fifth in the 1,600-meter run at 4:55.85; and Evan Bubolz, fifth in the 800 (2:15:18). Suring had four top-five finishes. Senior Creo VanBellinger took fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.75) and third in the long jump (18-7 1/4). Senior Will Vollmar was third in the 60-meter dash (7.74).
