The Gillett High School gymnasium was filled with proud, smiling family members, friends and schoolmates Sunday as the 45 members of the 2014 graduating class crossed the stage and received their diplomas at the annual commencement ceremony.
“Success is a journey, not a destination” was the motto for the Class of 2014, and these were the words the graduates were urged to take with them.
Class president Brianna Lemirande welcomed everyone to the ceremony, sharing a few of the many memories the class has made over the years. She said the class will be one to remember, as it was a class of many firsts for Gillett High School, including its famous homecoming flash mob.
Valedictorian Lisa Schmidt spoke about the bright futures the graduates have ahead of them.
“Obtaining success in life is not measured by how others see it; it is measured by how satisfied you are with where you are and what you have accomplished,” Schmidt said.
Straying from the traditional speech, salutatorian Nicole Rotter instead made a video of her classmates and teachers bidding a final goodbye. Students had the opportunity to say their final remarks about their experience at Gillett High School.
Schmidt and Rotter said the class remained close throughout high school, forming a bond that comes from having a small graduating class who has faced obstacles and made it to the point of high school graduation. They described their class as a unique bunch, always trying different things.
As the commencement ceremony drew to a close, the Class of 2014 walked through the doors with smiles on their faces and stepped into the future.
