During National Fire Prevention Week in October, Safe Kids Oconto County teamed up with fire departments and businesses to deliver fire prevention information to area residents.
Students completed a consent form distributed at their schools, and families are selected at random to receive a fire prevention message.
A fire truck arrived at each winner’s home, and firefighters checked the home for working smoke detectors. Safe Kids representatives told the families about calling 911, developing an evacuation plan and choosing a designated meeting place outside. The children were given “Here the Beep Where You Sleep” campaign materials.
Area businesses provided the families with a pizza for dinner.
This year 25 families in Oconto County had fire prevention messages and pizzas delivered to their homes.
Safe Kids of Oconto County was established in 2003 with a mission of preventing unintentional childhood injury, a leading cause of death and disability for children 18 and younger.
Participating in the program were the Oconto Falls Fire Department, Oconto Falls Area Lioness, Piccadilly Pizza, Lena Fire Department, McGuire’s, Oconto Fire Department, Brothers Three, Suring Fire Department, Pat’s Market, Brazeau Fire Department and Klondike Saloon.
