The Oconto Falls School Board accepted a counter offer of $43,000 for Spruce School after the two septic systems on the property failed their inspections, the school district said in a news release.
The School Board on Oct. 12 accepted an offer of $50,000 from Ray and Debra Lane, with the conditions the buyer be responsible for fixing the leaky roof and the school district be responsible for pumping the septic tank. Inspection reports regarding the septic system prompted the Lanes to renegotiate the purchase.
The School Board, at a special session on Oct. 28, came to an agreement with the Lanes, and the sale has been finalized.
The school, at 7904 County Road A, Lena, closed in June 2012 and was put on the market in October 2012 for $90,000. The School Board reduced the price several times, the latest in April 2014 when the price was set at $65,000.
The two-room schoolhouse educated generations of Spruce-area students. In recent years, the building housed a charter school with an environmental emphasis for students in grades one through five.
“It was a unique building. It’s kind of sad to see that disappear from the community,” said Ron Leja, School Board president.
Financial considerations and low enrollment led to its closure.
