Daylight saving time can create some confusion

Sometimes between Saturday night and Sunday morning, we are going to lose one hour of sleep, the so-called “daylight saving time.” I can remember when that was first put into being. My city uncle was in favor of it, because it meant he would have more time for fun things in the daylight hours after work. On the other hand, my farmer father imagined a longer work day for him. I can’t quite remember how old I was, but I do recall the back and forth of their debate. There were no winner or loser, as neither changed his opinion, but the powers that be put daylight saving time into place, regardless of how anyone felt about it. I know some people would not change their clock, as they didn’t like the change. How they ever managed to keep the times of the rest of how the world was living I have no idea. I don’t think I could have kept it straight. I am sometimes challenged when I am told my appointment is at 10:40. I have to convert it back to 20 to 10. This digital age is confusing to older brains. Another family I knew kept daylight saving time all through the year. They were also farmers, and again, I can’t imagine keeping it all straight. I know that my own farmer husband got up extra early for chores when it would first start. Did chores earlier at night also, promising that it would continue. He was right, it did continue, for about a week, then things would fall back to where they were before. I guess it proves that in America the powers that be can make decisions that Americans don’t always agree with, but in our freedom, we can choose what we will do to handle changes that are put upon us. I do not like the time change because my body does not accept it well. It takes me a week or two to go with the flow of the new times. I know that I will enjoy it being lighter in the evening, but won’t it be darker later into the morning? It seems that the changing of the times comes at different times in different years. I can’t remember it being in early March before. I do know that I have an old alarm clock that automatically sets itself for daylight saving time. This would be convenient if the time of the change didn’t get changed by the outside world. I have been caught more than once by the alarm going off before it needed to, or by it not going off on time, because it set itself on the wrong Saturday night. The computer and cell phone somehow know what time it is, but all of the other clocks have to be adjusted twice a year. Sometimes I think our world is becoming more and more complicated. It is a constant battle to keep on top of things. Meanwhile, senior citizens need to keep informed as best they can. Keeping both mind and body as limber and sharp as possible is important for our independence.
