The N.E.W. Credit Union board of directors and employees completed the ice bucket challenge Aug. 25. Employee Tina Klapatch said she issued the challenge because members of the “credit union family” have suffered from the disease.
“I knew it was a cause everyone would want to support,” she said.
The ice bucket challenge, in which people dare others to dump a bucket of ice water over their heads, raises awareness and money for the ALS Association. According to the association’s website, ALS is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, eventually leading to total paralysis and death.
ALS is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after he baseball player who brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939.
A group of 12 at N.E.W. Credit Union accepted the challenge in memory of Mary Taggert, former marketing director at N.E.W., Jean Woodworth, who provided lawn care services at N.E.W., and Gary Bonitz, a Credit Union National Association representative who worked with the N.E.W. staff.
Lisa Gilligan, CEO of the credit union, said the ice bucket challenge is a great way to raise money for ALS research that might eventually lead to a cure. The credit union accepted donations from its members and employees and donated $211 to the ALS Association.
The group nominated Oconto Electric Cooperative, Prophit Marketing Inc. and WESTconsin Credit Union to take the challenge.
