Wisconsin had 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending May 31, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
A warm, dry week allowed farmers to make good progress on their first cutting of hay, but precipitation would be welcome due to the lack of widespread showers in the past couple of weeks.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 9% very short, 25% short, 60% adequate and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 5% very short, 17% short, 68% adequate and 10% surplus.
Corn planting was 93% complete compared to the 5-year average of 89%. Corn was 65% emerged. Corn condition was 79% good to excellent.
Soybean planting was 89% complete compared to the average of 85%. Soybeans were 59% emerged. Soybean condition was 80% good to excellent.
Oat planting was 95% complete compared to the average of 93%. Oats were 74% emerged and 5% headed. Oat condition was rated 77% good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week. Winter wheat fields were 26% headed compared to the average of 27%. Winter wheat condition was 66% good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
The first cutting of alfalfa hay was 38% complete compared to the average of 35%. All hay condition was 68% good to excellent, down 5 percentage points from last week.
Spring tillage was 97% complete compared to the average of 95%.
Pasture and range condition was 58% good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week.
