UW-Whitewater Kate Bahrke, a marketing major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from Oconto is a member of the Warhawk volleyball team, which capped a historic 2024 season by finishing as runner-up at the NCAA Division 3 Championship in Salem, Virginia. UW-Whitewater, which finished with a 31-4 record, knocked off two of the top three seeds in the championship round on its way to the title match. They defeated third-seeded Emory (Ga.) 3-0 before edging No. 2 seed Johns Hopkins (Md.) in five sets, coming back from 2-1 down to advance. The Warhawks fell to undefeated Juniata 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 26-28, 15-10) in the final. UWW pushed a fifth set for the first time in nine seasons in the national title match — the previous eight were 3-0 sweeps — and nearly ended the Eagles’ current 97-match winning streak. Bahrke is a graduate of Oconto High School. UW-Milwaukee Oconto Falls’ Lauryn Slade is among the 1,340 prospective candidates for degree attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee commencement exercises Dec. 15. Slade will receive a Bachelor of Science from the School of Education.
