To the editor:
The Oconto Falls Area Heritage Center has been informed that the school district has received an offer to purchase Spruce School. The new owner plans to turn the school into a home. Unfortunately, this is not the desired direction the heritage center would like to see the storied school go.
The heritage center is in the process of sending out requests for donations to aid in obtaining ownership of the school and moving it to the Jefferson School property, which the Heritage Center owns, to form a small Heritage Learning Center.
The sad part is that although we have received donations, we are nowhere near the $300,000 goal to purchase, move it, and to start an endowment fund for future operations and expansion.
Time is short. The heritage center has two weeks to put together a plan to fund the purchase of Spruce School and save it from becoming a home. The Oconto Falls Area Heritage Center is asking for your help, big or small. A donation of any size would allow the heritage center the opportunity to create a place of continual learning as our forefathers wanted when they first got together and built Spruce School.
A donation can be given to a heritage center member or sent to Dale Seeling, 400 N. Main St., Oconto Falls 54154, or Barb Kasch, 8211 County Road E, Oconto Falls, 54154. Donations can also be made at any N.E.W Credit Union location or the Oconto Falls Community Library.
The heritage center hopes that many of you feel the same as the members of the heritage center do — that saving Spruce School as a school is worthy of a donation.
