Boys hockey seasons end for Hawks, Red Robins

Feb. 20 Lakeland 9, Shawano/Bonduel 2 Shawano/Bonduel could not find its rhythm in the Division 2 Sectional 2 WIAA regional finals playoff game against Lakeland. The Hawks lost 9-2 to end their season. The Thunderbirds were up 3-0 in the first period before Gavin Hundt scored for Shawano/Bonduel at 11:26. Michael Dillenburg had the assist. Lakeland scored four more times in the second period to lead 7-1 before Kielian Armbuster scored with a Blake Knope assist at 8:03 to make it 7-2. The Thunderbirds scored once more in the second period and sealed the win a goal in the third period. Shawano/Bonduel, which was seeded No. 6, had 15 shots on goal. Lakeland, seeded No. 3, had 33 shots on goal. Kaiden Thornborrow had 14 saves, and Tyson Lyons had 10. Each team was penalized seven times, the Hawks for 14 minutes and the Thunderbirds for 20. Northland Pines 6, Antigo 5 The Antigo and Wittenberg-Birnamwood co-op hockey team held a 4-2 lead after two periods, but Northland Pines knocked in four goals in the final period to earn the 6-5 win in the WIAA Division 2 Sectional regional finals game. Down 1-0 in the first period, Owen Dickman tied the game at 8:35 with assists from Carson Rhode and Eli Kassler. Antigo took the lead at 9:02 in the second period when Kassler scored. The Red Robins went up 3-1 at 11:47 on an Ethan Novy goal with Kassler and Liam Burt assisting. The Eagles scored less than a minute later, but Collin Tiedemann put Antigo back up 4-2 with a goal at 14:11. Dickman had the assist. But the third period belonged to the Eagles. From two goals down, they worked their way to two goals up, 6-4, before Kassler assisted Dickman to scored at 12:31 to bring the score to 6-5. The Red Robins, a No. 5 seed, had 25 shots on goals. The Eagles, seeded No. 4, had 40 shots on goal, while Richie Veriha had 34 saves. Each team was penalized four times for eight minutes.
