The Bonduel High School girls track and field team took third Monday at the Gillett Invitational.
Oconto Falls won the meet, and Suring placed second. Menominee Indian finished seventh.
Forecasts put the meet in jeopardy, but most of the rain held off until the end, though more than a few athletes could work on their preparation for the cold.
“They don’t take into account that, when it’s cold like this, you have to warm up up at least twice as much as normal,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “Their performances reflect some of the lack of warming up. It’s a good lesson to learn.”
Bonduel won two events. Senior Mallory Mews won the 3,200-meter run and placed second in the 1,600-meter run. Freshman Emily Sorenson took first in the long jump and placed second in the 200-meter dash.
Megan Fischer took second in the high jump.
Menominee Indian saved its best for last.
In the final throw of the final event of the meet, sophomore Ania Smith broke her own Menominee Indian record in the discus with a toss of 121 feet, 7 inches to win that event.
“I’m excited,” Smith said after she beat the record. “I don’t usually throw well in the cold. I pulled it together in the end.”
Smith threw 120-10 in the discus as a freshman to set the record. She has also broken school records in the shot put this season.
