The Bonduel High School football team earned a key Central Wisconsin Conference-8 win Friday, beating Weyauwega-Fremont 61-21, to set up a match between second-place teams next week in Bonduel.
Bonduel (5-1, 3-1 CWC-8) will host Shiocton (5-1, 3-1 CWC-8), which beat Stevens Point Pacelli 41-0 Friday. Both teams have only lost to first-place Amherst (6-0, 4-0 CWC-8).
“Every win in conference is important, trying to get to that magical number 4 to make the playoffs,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “Everything after that is a bonus. We have a big game coming up next week. We were happy we didn’t overlook this team. They’re a good team.”
Bonduel took control early against Weyauwega-Fremont, getting a 55-yard touchdown run from senior Dan Tauchen and a 14-yard touchdown run from senior Hunter VanDerLinden.
Quarterback Blake Hudziak punched it in a 2-yard run in the first quarter for Weyauwega-Fremont (2-4, 1-3 CWC-8), but Bonduel was off to the races in the second, scoring 27 points.
Bonduel would finish with 537 yards rushing. VanDerLinden led the way with three touchdowns and 198 yards on 18 carries. Tauchen had six carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
“I was really happy with the way our kids came out and played physical,” Westrich said. “I thought we wore them out a little bit.”
Bonduel quarterback Colton Dobratz went 4 for 5 passing for 75 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Connor Rosin, who had three catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Austin Sioka had two interceptions, one in the first and one in the fourth, before leaving the game with an injury.
The Bears’ pass defense gave up 319 yards to Hudziak. Hudziak completed 18 of his 31 pass attempts for two touchdowns.
Ten of those passes went to Dylan Pankow for 128 yards and a touchdown.
“Against the run, I thought we were fine,” Westrich said. “We have to tighten up our pass defense.”
