Sam Falck finished 21st for the 13th-place Bonduel High School boys cross-country team Saturday at the WIAA State Cross-Country Championships at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Senior Mallory Mews finished 81st for Bonduel in the girls meet.
Darlington won the boys meet, followed by Chequamegon.
“I thought we had a shot at 12th,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “It was a little tougher this year. … We would have had to have had a pretty good day to move up a notch.”
Grantsburg, which finished with a team score of 247, placed 12th. Bonduel finished with 295 points.
Falck, a junior, finished in 17:05.17, 2 seconds better than his previous best time.
“I thought Sam Falck ran phenomenal,” Watry said. “He ran his all-time best time.”
Isaac Palmer finished 66th, Austin Marcks 97th overall and Travis Wollenberg 118th, despite hurting his hip on the course.
“Travis was a trooper,” Watry said. “He could barely walk after the race.”
Josh Schill, James Watry and Austin Kurey rounded out the Bonduel finishers, taking the 147, 148 and 149 spots, respectively.
Bryce Robaidek, who was the Bears’ No. 5 runner in last week’s sectional, was unable to attend Saturday’s state meet.
Mews, a three-time state qualifier, finished with a time of 17:06.15 to wrap up her cross-country career.
“Mallory had a little bit of an off day,” the coach said. “She gave it everything she had, she was just a little off. It happens.”
Watry said Mews had a major impact on the program.
“She’s the first runner that I’ve coached all six years,” Watry said. “I got to see her progress. She’s just a really hard worker, does everything right. Lifts weights, fantastic diet and nutrition. Positive attitude. It’s really refreshing to see her get back for her third year.”
