Arnold Henry “Nookie” Thomas, 87, of Shawano, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at his home.
Arnold was born March 24, 1927, in Shawano, a son of the late Herman and Hattie (Meisner) Thomas. He attended the Shawano schools, graduating from high school in 1946. After high school he worked at Gehrke Montour Heating in Shawano. On Sept. 27, 1952, he was united in marriage to the former Ruth Ann Engel at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. The couple spent their entire married life in Shawano.
In 1962, Arnold attended barber school in Green Bay. He owned and operated the Model Barber Shop from 1964-1991. In retirement, he and Ruth wintered in Florida.
Arnold was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Shawano. He was an avid bird watcher. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He enjoyed the board game Aggravation. Arnold was a true family man and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth Thomas; one daughter, Jane (Daniel) Schumacher, of Shawano; one son, James (Cheryl) Thomas, of Lakeville, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Anthony and Allison Thomas; one brother, Franklin “Huntz” Thomas, of Shawano; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Grover and an infant brother, Robert Thomas, and one infant sister, Mary Ella Thomas.
Funeral services for Arnold Thomas will be on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Pastor Ron Raddatz will officiate. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano. Relatives and friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service.
The family has requested memorials in Arnold’s name for Resurrection Lutheran Church.
