Alvin “Al” E. Flaig, 84, of Ashwaubenon, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 8, 1930, in Split Rock to the late Edward and Elizabeth (Kleman) Flaig.
Al was married on April 14, 1951, to Norma Ruth Tramel in Pontiac, Illinois. He joined the Army in January 1948 and spent three years in Japan and six months in Germany before being honorably discharged in January 1952.
From a young boy, Al loved anything with wheels, from a tricycle with no handlebars, to a bicycle he rode around the block that he rented for a nickel, a city milk delivery truck, a dump truck, an Army jeep and finally his 18-wheelers.
Over the years, he drove for several companies. Alvin retired from Stang Wisconsin Trucking in 1992 after 30-plus years. He also enjoyed working for Barb and Dave at Timberline Trees.
Al owned and rode Harley Davidson motorcycles for over 60 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley with his two sons and friends, going to Doc’s Harley Davidson, going on camping trips with Ruth around the country in their RV, listening to polka and old country music, and having coffee each morning at Skip’s Diner with friends and solving the world problems.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth; sons, Geno and Tim (special friend, Michelle Andrus), all of Green Bay; son-in-law, Steve DeBruin, Algoma; four grandchildren, Jason (Jamie) Flaig, Pocatello, Idaho, Joey Flaig, Green Bay, Angie (Brian) Woolery, Hudson, and Jackie DeBruin, Green Bay; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Gordon and Roger (Donna), Green Bay; sisters, Evelyn (Frank) Ferguson, Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Marcella Cheyka, Shawano; a sister-in-law, Pilar Flaig, Minneapolis; and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon DeBruin; daughter-in-law, Jennie Flaig; brothers, Jim and Howard Flaig; sisters-in-law, Bette and Deloris Flaig; and a brother-in-law, Frank Cheyka.
Visitation was held at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Ave., Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, from 3:30 p.m. until the funeral service at 7 p.m., with Ann Froelich officiating. Military honors followed. Entombment was at Fort Howard Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Alvin’s name.

Alvin had a good spirit and touched all those who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
