2 compete for Underhill chairman

Incumbent Peter Vorpahl and challenger Mark Winkler are candidates for chairman of the town of Underhill in the April 7 election. Here are their election profiles. Peter Vorpahl Age: 43, lifelong resident of Underhill Education: Graduate of Gillett High School, 1989; graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in forest management, 1993 Employment: Employed at Gaertig Farms, EMT for Gillett Area Ambulance, member of Underhill Fire Department Experience: Town of Underhill chairman, two years; various offices in the Underhill Fire Department, 12 years; fire chief, six years Statement: “The best candidate for this position needs the ability to objectively look at multiple sides of an issue and make a decision that is in the best interest of all the residents of the township. They must be able to manage limited funds to maintain necessary services and improve the infrastructure of the town. They also need the foresight to put the town in a position to continue to grow. I feel I am that candidate.” Mark Winkler Age: 46, resident of Underhill since 2001 Education: Graduate of Oconto Falls High School, 1987; associate degree in diesel, parts technologies and inventory management, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, 1989 Employment: Employed with Packer City International Trucks Inc. for past 26 years in various departments. Currently serving as a municipal sales associate in the Shawano branch covering the Northeast Wisconsin area. Experience: Served on the Gillett School District Board of Education for 12 years, president for six years; member of Gillett Area Ambulance Service since 2007, certified as an emergency medical responder, president for four years; Underhill Fire Department, firefighter and secretary since 2007; Wisconsin Towns Association advisory committee; Wisconsin Hunter Education instructor Statement: “My experience helped me develop a good knowledge of working with the public, managing funds, developing budgets, procurement of products and services and the ability and willingness to explore alternative revenue sources. Budgeting effectively is important to maintain services to residents and town infrastructure and promote growth. I will explore cooperative efforts with neighboring towns and villages for cost savings. Lastly, I will promote Underhill as a positive and safe place to raise a family, vacation or retire.”
