A trio of highway intersections in and around Shawano are getting a closer look by state officials.
Members of the Shawano County Highway Safety Commission on Jan. 28 expressed concerns over the intersections of state Highway 22 (South Main Street) and County Road B near ThedaCare, state Highway 47/55 (Airport Drive) and County Road B, as well as state Highway 29 and River Road (between Bonduel and Doc’s Harley-Davidson).
“This has been a hot spot for crashes in the county recently,” Sheriff George Lenzner said about the River Road intersection. “We just want the state to take notice and help with some ideas to make this a safer intersection and hopefully move up on a construction ladder to do something sooner than later.”
Shawano County Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol asked Tony Kemnitz of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) about the status of improvements at the other two intersections.
Discussion on the intersection near ThedaCare centered on functionality, congestion issues and other traffic concerns. Safety and crash history concerns were the focus of the other County Road B intersection.
Kemnitz said he would schedule a traffic count during high-traffic times at Highway 22 and County Road B. As for the other County Road B intersection, he provided information on another contact regarding those safety concerns.
“These (three) intersections have been the site of multiple crashes over the last five to 10 years,” Lenzner said. “Current crash trends show this pattern continuing. This issue is of great concern for Shawano County, and we are requesting that this work be completed as soon as practical.”
Lenzner and Bystol will send a letter to DOT officials regarding the concerns.
