The Shawano Community High School soccer team’s season came to an end Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Marshfield in the WIAA Division 2 Regional final at Marshfield High School.
No. 5 Shawano (15-5-1) couldn’t pull off the upset of top-seeded Marshfield (13-5-1) after taking a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a penalty kick by Garret Schlise.
“We had a few opportunities, they were just wide, like in all our losses,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “We had enough opportunities that I think we could have won this game. It just didn’t pan out for us today.”
Marshfield got its own penalty kick a few minutes later to tie the game 1-1 before halftime.
Marshfield added a second goal early in the second half.
Shawano goalie Michael Meisner had an active day, snagging nine saves.
“They had a few more shots on goal,” Croschere said. “He had a few nice saves and kept us in the game.”
The coach said he’s proud of what the team, and the senior class, was able to do.
“It was a good four years with this group of seniors,” Croschere said. “We had some new additions this year, and I think they fit in well with everything. We played a nice season and everyone can be proud of what we did. We had a couple of games where you can ask yourself ‘what if,’ but I think it was a successful season.”
