More than 250 area residents watched as dazzling models walked the runway Thursday during the 11th annual “Spring Fling” fashion show presented by the Shawano Woman’s Club.
The show, which was held at The Gathering in Shawano for the first time, is expected to raise $7,000 for student scholarships, the Shawano County Historical Society and other community projects.
“It is our huge fundraiser,” show chairwoman Judy Wetzel said. “Every cent that we make at this show will go back into the community.”
Mary Martzke, the program’s emcee, thanked the attendees and more than 100 businesses that contributed to the event.
Raffle prizes included gift cards to area restaurants, tickets to the Civic Symphony of Green Bay, a Milwaukee Brewers game package and a football autographed by the Green Bay Packers. There were also fruit baskets and various gift baskets.
Todd Edwards and Tom Melchior, wearing tuxedos donated by the Gentlemen’s Quarters, escorted the models to and from the runway.
“I enjoy community activities like this, for nonprofits,” Edwards said. “It is just fun meeting new people.”
Wetzel said the fling outgrew the Shawano Lake County Park, where it was held for 10 years.
“We used to have it every year at the county park, but it became so crowded that we needed to make a change, to accommodate everyone comfortably,” Wetzel said. “It is a nice problem to have.”
Other stores providing clothing and accessories for the show included B&H Fashionwear of Clintonville, Body Essentials, Generations, Dreier’s Pharmacy and Gift Shoppe, and Maximus Salon & Wig Boutique.
Other fundraisers throughout the year generate another $3,o00, which the club has used to support other community organizations, including SOS K-9, homeless task force Shawano Area Matthew 25 and Safe Haven domestic abuse and sexual assault support center.
