Girl Scouts raise cookie prices

A box of Girl Scout cookies will cost 50 cents more this year. The Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Lakes announced this week that the price of cookies will increase from $3.50 per box to $4 per box. The increase is the first in over seven years for the council and is intended to offset increasing costs of running the cookie program, said Patti Denton, the organization’s chief financial officer. “Our baker’s price for the cookies, as well as the cost of delivering the cookie program has continued to rise. After seven years of holding our price, we felt that it was time to make a modest increase to offset these additional costs and enable our girls and troops to remain profitable,” Denton said in a press release. “This increase allows us to both continue to provide a healthy revenue stream back to our council and to better support girls in running a profitable cookie business to help fund their Girl Scout adventures like camp and troop trips.” Cookie prices are determined individually by each of the 112 councils in the U.S. The local Girl Scout council contracts with ABC Bakers for the cookies. All of the net proceeds from Girl Scout cookie sales are reinvested back into the local councils for activities and projects that positively impact their communities. “When you buy cookies from a Girl Scout, you are investing in a girl’s future and the future leadership of our country,” said Christin Stapelman, who supervises the council’s cookie program. “Through the Girl Scout cookie program, girls learn five essential life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Think of it as a donation to Girl Scouts where we thank you with a box of cookies!” This year’s cookie program runs from Jan. 22 through April 3.
