Girl Scouts launch cookie sales next week

The area’s annual Girl Scout cookie sales will begin Jan. 23 and continue into March. Scouts in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula will conduct door-to-door sales in January and February. Troops will host cookie booths in March. This year, Girl Scouts have the opportunity to utilize Digital Cookie, an online platform that allows girls to sell cookies to friends and family across the country. “Digital Cookie is an enhancement, not a replacement, for traditional door-to-door and face-to-face cookie sales,” said Lee Snodgrass, communications director at Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, “It allows girls to add some 21st century experience, but the girls know that eye contact, a confident sales pitch and a smile delivered in person is still their most powerful tool in making their business a success.” Girl Scouts will be selling a new gluten-free cookie this year. Trios features semi-sweet chocolate chips nestled in a gluten-free peanut butter oatmeal cookie. While the other varieties remain at $3.50 per box, a bag of Trios will cost $5 per bag. The cookie program is designed to teach financial literacy and leadership skills. It remains the premiere fundraiser for the 103-year-old organization. All proceeds from the cookie program stay local. The girls receive a percentage based on how much they’ve sold, and the remainder goes to the local Girl Scout Council, which helps fund Girl Scout programming and services. Programming includes camp, travel opportunities, local events and more. All girls in grades K-12 can still join Girl Scouts to take part in the cookie program, making them eligible for numerous events, trips and programs throughout the year. Girls do not need to join a troop to participate in Girl Scouts. For information, call 800-246-4171 or visit www.girlscoutcookies.org.
