Gillett/Suring wrestlers produced three second-place finishes and took fifth among 11 teams at the Kewaunee Invitational on Saturday.
Southern Door won the invitational with 215.5 points. Seymour (183) took second and Mishicot (176) third.
Finishing second for Gillett/Suring were junior Garrett Kohls, who was pinned by Keenan Graef, of West De Pere, 1 minute, 52 seconds into the 126-pound final; junior Grant Fischer, who fell to Michael Bertrand, of Southern Door, at 2:38 at 138 pounds; senior Brett Milhans, who lost 9-5 to Mishicot’s Kyle Tesarik at 170 pounds.
Kohls won three of his five matches by pin, defeating Seymour’s Seth Swenson (0:52), Brillion’s Devin Thoreson (3:30) and Southern Door’s Caleb Buchberger (1:23). Kohls also won a 16-6 major decision over Manitowoc Lutheran’s Alex Stubbe.
Fischer won two of his four matches on falls, defeating Mishicot’s Mason Ney in 1:04 and Kewaunee’s Michael Barribeau in 1:10. He also defeated Tanner Woepse, of Kiel, 8-6, and Hunter Folkman, of West De Pere, 7-3.
Milhans pinned Christian Binning, of Lourdes Academy, at 1:52, Matt Eisch, of Seymour, at 4:19 and William Collins-McGovern, of Kewaunee, at 1:02.
Juniors Alex Zeitler (152) and Brodin Bennin (182) each placed third for Gillett/Suring.
Zeitler won three matches and suffered his first two losses of the season. He defeated Lourdes Academy’s Brian Dowling 8-2, Kiel’s Evan Maurer 10-3 and Two Rivers’ Alex Richmond on a fall less than a minute into the match.
The two losses by Zeitler were the first of the season, but coach Mitchell Szwet said he has progressed well.
“He lost two matches against very good wrestlers,” coach Mitchell Szwet said. “Both losses were only by a point. We are working to correct a few techniques, but he is learning quickly. I expect great things from him this year.”
“I definitely have to improve upon my technique and make adjustments during practice,” Zeitler said.
Szwet also was impressed with first-year sophomore Dante Carlson (220), who notched his first two victories of the season.
Carlson, who took fifth, pinned Two Rivers’ Damien Bullock (1:49) and Kiel’s Justin Kannich (1:10).
“I am happy about this because he is such a great kid,” Szwet said. “He is extremely hard working and he is a sponge when it comes to learning from his coaches.”
