Freshman center Megan La Crosse’s 15 points were too much for Gillett Secondary School to overcome in a 37-24 loss to Southern Door at home Friday.
“For a freshman to play that well, we will not see another 6-footer like that this year, and we are encouraged with how well my players played against a good Division 3 team,” Gillett coach Justin Daul said.
The Lady Tigers (8-4, 7-1 Marinette and Oconto Conference) were hobbled by injuries and fatigue after playing three games in four nights, including a 41-27 win at Crivitz on Thursday.
“Legs and injuries are what killed us this to be honest with you,” Daul said. “To play a good team like Southern Door with those legs, we knew we had our backs to the wall.”
Senior guard Maddy Wilbur missed Friday night’s game with a back injury. Daul was unsure when she could return to the court.
“It is something that she tweaked a couple of games ago, but she is fighting through it,” he said.
The Lady Tigers trailed 7-6 after the first period, but the game slowly got away after Southern Door (9-2, 6-1 Packerland Conference) outscored Gillett 9-4 and 15-7 in the second and third periods.
Sophomore guard Erin Balthazor and senior guard Rebecca Wolfe led Gillett in points with six each, but got into foul trouble with three apiece.
“Erin’s goal was to get into the lane and draw fouls. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t,” Daul said. “Becca did a good job at the baseline; some of her points came off the boards.”
Daul also praised Balthazor and Wolfe for their leadership.
“Some of the stuff those girls did was not in the score book, getting on the ground, fighting hard to get a loose ball,” Daul said.
