The Gillett Public School District will have to wait a little longer for a school resource officer (SRO) to be posted at the district’s schools to interact with students.
The district has been working with Sheriff Todd Skarban to negotiate an agreement for the county to provide the officer on a cost-share measure, similar to the agreement currently in place with the Suring Area Public School District. The 2024-25 budget approved by the Gillett School Board includes funding for the district’s share of the cost.
Gillett Superintendent Nathan Hanson reported to the board Oct. 17 that the proposal was on its way to the Oconto County Board and the SRO position could be posted and filled by December. But Hanson said Oct. 18 that he had learned County Administrator Richard Heath wants more information before signing off on the plan.
“The administrator wants the sheriff to follow the county’s process for filling positions,” Hanson said. “He needs to put a better plan together.”
The possibility still exists that county approval of the proposal will be forthcoming by the end of the calendar year, Hanson said.
“Nobody has said no yet; nobody has said yes yet,” he said. “We’re going to sit down and try to figure out another way to move forward.”
