Missed free throws in the final frame were costly Friday as the Suring High School boys basketball team lost a 53-43 nonconference game to visiting Bonduel.
With both teams in the bonus entering the fourth period and Bonduel leading 43-32, the Eagles were a collective 4 for 11 on the free-throw line. Bonduel (7-1, 3-0 Central Wisconsin-8) converted four of its 10 shots.
“We were outscored by 12 from the line and the margin of victory was 10. We were defeated on the free-throw line,” Suring coach James Keeffe said. “We finished 4 for 19 from the line.”
Freshman guard Ryan Mahoney kept Suring (2-6, 2-3 Marinette and Oconto Conference) in the game with key shots in the second half, scoring 13 of his 16 points, including two from beyond the arc.
Bonduel coach Duke Copp said Mahoney, who shot 62.5 percent from the field, was difficult to contain.
“He was tough to stop, he attacked the basket, he kept them in the game,” Copp said.
Senior Creo VanBellinger, who made all of his baskets from the perimeter, added 12 points for the Eagles.
Bonduel 6-foot-2 senior Connor Rosin capitalized on Eagles fouls in the first and fourth period, and converted 5 of 9 from the free-throw line en route to a game-high 19 points.
Keeffe said Rosin’s four three-pointers midway through the contest prevented the Eagles from waging a comeback.
“The biggest challenge heading into the game was to contain both Peyton Czarapata and Connor Rosin,” Keeffe said. “Rosin hurt us from distance and on the free-throw line.”
Czarapata, a 6-4 junior center, scored 12 points and made 6 of 7 free throws.
