Oconto County Public Health will visit Oconto County schools in October to offer free flu vaccines to students. Oconto County Public Health will offer free HPV, meningitis and Tdap vaccines to all sixth- to 12th-graders as well.
A completed, signed consent form is required for each student receiving any vaccine. Consent forms are available at www.ocph.info.
Oconto County Public Health will visit schools on the following dates: Gillett School District, Wednesday, Oct. 22; Lena School District, Thursday Oct. 30; Oconto Elementary School, Tuesday, Oct. 21; Oconto Middle School, Tuesday, Oct. 28; Oconto High School: Thursday, Oct. 23; Abrams Elementary School, Monday, Oct. 13; Oconto Falls Elementary School, Wednesday, Oct. 15; Washington Middle School, Thursday, Oct. 16; Oconto Falls High School, Tuesday, Oct. 14; Falls Alternative Learning Site, Thursday, Oct. 16; St. Anthony School, Tuesday, Oct. 14; and Suring School District, Wednesday, Oct. 29.
The flu is a serious disease that can lead to complications such as pneumonia, even in healthy children. The symptoms can last for up to two weeks and include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, severe body aches, chills, runny or stuffy nose, extreme exhaustion and, sometimes in children, diarrhea and vomiting.
Getting the flu shot every year is the best protection against the flu. Individuals can also stay healthy by washing their hands frequently, covering their cough and staying home when they are sick.
