Mequon Frechette loves the sound of the hometown crowd.
The mixed martial arts amateur fighter will hear it again as he takes on Fond du Lac amateur Aaron Drouse in a match Saturday at Menominee Casino Resort’s King of the Cage: Dynamite event.
“It’s awesome, man. It really is,” Frechette said. “It’s an experience. Every time I walk out the place goes nuts. I can barely hear the announcer when they say my name. It’s crazy. It’s really nice.”
Frechette, a Keshena native and 2011 graduate of Shawano Community High School, had his first fight in his hometown back in April and says the hometown support helps a lot when he’s squaring off against an opponent.
“I feel like I have everybody’s support in that building,” he said. “It’s not just me going against this kid. It’s me and my entire hometown against this kid. I think that makes me much more dangerous.”
Frechette, undefeated at 3-0, specifically wanted the fight with Drouse, who brings a 3-3 record to the fight.
“I asked for this fight. I wanted to fight this kid so bad,” Frechette said.
The two were supposed to fight earlier in the year, but the fight didn’t happen.
“Things are set in stone. I get to get my hands on this kid and I’d like to whoop him,” Frechette said. “This kid has a lot more experience than me and I want to show I’m a better fighter than him. I just can’t wait. Saturday night he’s going down.”
Frechette says he’s grown a lot since participating in his first MMA fight in 2012, including enlisting the help of coaches Matt Putnam and Slade King.
“I’m twice the fighter I was last year,” he said. “I really found some great coaches. We put in the hard work and my record shows it. In my opinion. I have excellent coaches. I have a boxing coach. I have a wrestling coach. They all get together and put their opinions together on how to make me the best fighter I can be. So far, they’ve done a very good job.”
Frechette played football, basketball and baseball at SCHS and was introduced to the sport by Rocky Delorme, who lost a battle with cancer this summer.
Also on the card for Saturday night is Keshena fighter Bernard Webster, who will take on Fond du Lac’s Alex Figueroa. The main event features Cincinnati’s Dominique Steele going against Zak Ottow, one Wisconsin top fighters.
Frechette, though, is focused only on Drouse and giving the hometown crowd something to cheer.
“He’s a tough kid. A lot of people in the state thought this would make a very good fight,” Frechette said. “That’s exactly what they’re going to see Saturday night.”
