The public is invited to attend a high school forensics open house at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 12, in the Gillett Secondary School commons.
All 21 students competing for the Gillett High School forensics team have qualified for the state competition April 17 and 18 in Madison. Participants received two or three scores of 20 or better at the district contest March 28 in Marinette to advance to the state competition.
Thirteen students received a perfect score of 25 points: Jacob Timm, Brittany Fetterly, Maya Breed, Joe Karls, Dylan Pratsch, Tristan Wolske, Myranda Pratsch, Elizabeth Kahler, Hanna Brock, Faith Sorlie, Kalea Britton, Kaylee Simon and Alex Young.
The team also participated in the Marinette & Oconto Conference meet Feb. 2 in Peshtigo and subdistrict festival March 2 in Lena. All participants were invited to participate in the district competition.
The team is coached by Tami McQuillan, Stephanie Spang and Don Olderman.
The purpose of forensics is to enhance communication skills through participation in speech events. According to the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association, the goal of the organization is “to provide a significant training ground for the development of students’ abilities in public speaking and in the oral interpretation of literature.”
Approximately 360 schools, with an average of about 5,000 students, from around Wisconsin participate each year.
