A new brush truck has been in service since spring with the Cecil-Washington Fire Department thanks to a donation from Trans Canada Pipeline.
The 2006 F250 Ford, valued at $11,000, was given to the department last year.
Firefighters then worked to refurbish it, replacing the body with a new box and adding a pump to convert the truck for fighting brush fires.
“We worked on it whenever we had the time,” Fire Chief Jeff Homan said. “We just got it put together this spring.”
It replaces a brush truck that the department had been using since 1985 and was on its last legs — or wheels.
“We had a lot of electrical issues with it and parts were hard to find,” Homan said.
Homan said Trans Canada Pipeline, which is in the department’s service area, offered to donate the truck last summer.
“They like doing things like that,” Homan said.
Money from the department’s fireman’s festivals from previous years was used to refurbish the truck.
“We’ve got about $5,000 into it,” Homan said.
The department, which has 26 volunteer firefighters, has had several opportunities to use the new brush truck so far.
“We had it out this spring a few times,” Homan said.
