Shawano County roadways were the site of six fatal crashes in 2024, which led to eight deaths.
Sheriff George Lenzner told the public safety committee Feb. 5 that five of those crashes involved impaired drivers, and five were also single-vehicle crashes.
“Still too many,” he said.
In Wisconsin in 2024, there were 502 crashes resulting in 567 deaths, he said.
The number of crashes was up from 2023, but the number of deaths was down.
He said deputies issue a lot of traffic citations.
“Our guys do a lot with traffic citations,” he said. “I think traffic enforcement is crime prevention in a way.”
Traffic stops in January led to 339 citations being issued. These included more than 60 tickets for a variety of speeding violations, as well as operating while intoxicated, seat belt violations, operating with a suspended or revoked license, operating without insurance or without proof of insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Stopping a vehicle for a traffic violation can lead to other charges such as open intoxicants, drug offenses, weapons violations and theft.
