Donald J. “Don” Gajewski, 87, of Shawano, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 15, 2015.
Don was born in Milwaukee on Oct. 28, 1927. As a young man he enjoyed living by Brady Street, where he first met his wife, Katie, at age 16. At age 17, Don enlisted into the United States Navy. Upon his return to Milwaukee, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Firkins on Sept. 11, 1948. He also began his nearly 40-year career at the Allen Bradley Company.
During his free time, Don enjoyed baking, yard work, reading World War II books, and listening to big band music. In their retirement, Don and Katie split their time living between Florida and Shawano. Every summer, they would share countless meals with their grandchildren, Rob, Ryan and Jaime.
Don was especially fond of spending time with his great-grandson, Charlie, and the family dog, Maggie. Most of all, he will be missed by his beloved wife, Katie, with whom he spent over 70 years. They rarely spent a night apart and were fortunate to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary last month surrounded by friends and family.
Don is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Firkins) Gajewski, of Shawano; his son, Robert “Bob” (Nancy) Gajewski, of Rhinelander; two grandsons, Rob (Jaime) Gajewski, of Shawano, and Ryan Gajewski, of Madison; as well as a great-grandson, Charlie.
A small family memorial service was held at Birch Hill on Feb. 17, 2015.
The Gajewski family would like to thank Father Luke from Sacred Heart for his kindness as well as the entire staff at Birch Hill for their care and concern.
