Burglary
A rural Shawano man has been charged with burglary for allegedly breaking into the People’s Express South in the city last month.
Rafael A. Vanlopik, 22, is accused of burglarizing the gas station at 716 S. Main St. on Aug. 5 and stealing numerous packs and cartons of cigarettes, which he then allegedly sold around town, according to the criminal complaint.
Because of a previous felony conviction for burglary and arson, Vanlopik could face an enhanced penalty on the burglary charge of 16½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine if found guilty.
He is also charged with misdemeanor theft, criminal damage to property and obstructing an officer.
A $2,500 signature bond was set in the case, which Vanlopik refused to sign, according to court records.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 26.
Manufacture/delivery of marijuana
A Bowler man is facing a felony charge of manufacture and delivery of marijuana.
Robert M. Calkins, 35, could face a maximum 3½ years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted. He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A confidential informant working with Stockbridge-Munsee police and sheriff’s detectives allegedly purchased $20 worth of marijuana from Calkins in the town of Bartelme in February, according to the criminal complaint.
Calkins is free on a $1,000 cash bond and is due in court for an adjourned initial appearance Monday.
Felony intimidation
A Shawano man has been charged with a felony count of intimidation of a victim in a domestic abuse-related case that occurred in the city last week.
Al T. Smith, 46, is accused of threatening a woman to try and prevent her from reporting an alleged domestic abuse incident last Friday.
He could face a maximum 10 years in prison and $25,000 fine if convicted.
He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of bail jumping and domestic abuse-related disorderly conduct.
A $250 cash bond was set at a hearing Monday. Smith is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 30.
Burglary
A Shawano man is facing a felony count of burglary for allegedly breaking into a basement in the city on Sunday and stealing tools.
Karl J. Peters, 48, could face a maximum 12½ years in prison and $25,000 fine if convicted. He is also charged with a felony count of identity theft for allegedly giving police a false name when he was questioned. That charge carries a maximum possible penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Peters, who is also charged with a misdemeanor count of theft, was ordered held on $500 cash bond and is scheduled for an adjourned initial appearance Monday.
