Bonduel High School led area teams with four first-place finishes, but defending Division 3 state team champion Coleman still won the 29th annual Shawano Holiday Classic wrestling tournament Saturday in Shawano.
Coleman finished the day with seven champions en route to 431 points. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (336) finished second and Bonduel (325) third. Shawano placed eighth.
“We had a lot of good teams here,” first-year Shawano coach Michael Homan said. “I think it was some of the best competition we’ve seen in a tournament this year. Another great year for the Holiday Classic.”
Bonduel’s four champions were Garrett Siolka, who pinned New London’s Grant Oswald in 38 seconds in the 126-pound title match and remained undefeated on the season; Jordan Boldt, who defeated Rhinelander’s Tyler Olson 4-2 in the final in the 106-pound class; Dan Tauchen, who beat Hunter Kreger 10-2 in the 160-pound championship; and heavyweight Bennett Gunderson, who stopped Coleman’s Donnovan Salewski 7-2 in the in the final.
“It was a good day,” Bonduel coach Chris Rank said. “We wanted to place in the top two and take home a trophy. Obviously we came up a little short on that. To have five guys in the finals and have four champs, I don’t know that we’ve ever had four champs.”
Jacob Banker (152) placed second for the Bears, and Travis Wollenberg (138), Austin Siolka (145) and Mitch Sokolski (170) each placed third.
Bonduel is short two weight classes (113, 120) this season, which might have been the difference between second and third place.
“It’s hurting us as a team right now,” Rank said.
Dalton Parson (132) and Mason Boogren (182) led Shawano with fourth-place finishes.
Parson lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Jesse Sprague in the third-place match after an injury.
“He was wrestling tough,” Homan said. “At 132 there were some good kids … (Parson) was wrestling very well up until that point. It was tough to see him sustain an injury like that.”
Boogren, who was 11-0 going into the tournament, took his first two losses of the season, including a 3-2 decision to Berlin’s Mitchell Kramer in the third-place match.
Boogren injured his ankle during the football season and was having issues with it last week in practice.
“I would definitely say he wasn’t wrestling at 100 percent,” Homan said. “I think if he’s healthy and in the right frame of mind, he probably takes first in that tournament. Didn’t quite have it there Saturday.”
Shawano’s Danny Darling (113) and Damon Braatz (285) both finished in fifth place.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s August Peplinski (195) and Alex Peplinski (170) went undefeated to win championships in their brackets.
August Peplinski pinned Coleman’s Collin Kempka in 1:24 in the championship match. Alex Peplinski beat Peshtigo’s Shane Marquardt 12-4 in the title match.
Clintonville also competed in the tourney, but only had four wrestlers on the varsity mats and finished last in the 11-team field.
Tim Jerabek led the Truckers with a fourth-place finish at 138 pounds. He lost to Bonduel’s Travis Wollenberg 9-4 in the third-place match. Cole Cotherman (120) took fifth.
