Kellie Claflin, agriscience educator at Gillett High School, recently co-taught an eight-day professional development institute at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
She helped to teach the Principles of Agricultural Science – Animal Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education course for 20 agriscience teachers from across the United States.
CASE is an instructional system that is changing the culture of agriculture programs in the United States through intense teacher professional development; inquiry-based, student-focused lessons; assessment; and certification. CASE equips teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom and prepares students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math.
While at the CASE Institute, Claflin spent 65 hours working with teacher Mark Meyer, of Kansas, facilitating nearly every lesson in the yearlong curriculum and teaching participants how to deliver lessons in an inquiry-based way that will shift focus in the classroom from teacher-led to student-directed learning.
“The CASE curriculum allows students to truly get hands-on experience with different facets in the agriculture industry. By attending the trainings I gain resources to meet students needs’ and gain new ideas. It is invaluable,” Claflin said.
Claflin also attended a nine-day professional development institute at the Dairy Education Center in Nicollet, Minnesota, hosted by Southern Minnesota Center of Agriculture, to teach the Food Science and Safety CASE course in the Gillett agriculture program.
