Carl E. Marten

Carl E. Marten, 78, Mattoon, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at his home under the care of Le Royer Hospice. He was born on March 31, 1936, in Mattoon, the son of the late Charles and Adeline (Kowalske) Marten. On April 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Jane Kuehn in Shawano. She survives. Carl worked at Badger Northland in Kaukauna for 13 years. He then owned and operated Marten Lawn and Garden Center in Appleton for 34 years. After retirement, the couple moved to Mattoon. He was a founding member of the Apple Creek Snow Ryders Snowmobile Club, the Outagamie Conservation Club Trap Team and St. John Lutheran Church, Mattoon. Carl enjoyed hunting with his boys, four-wheeling with his boys and grandchildren, fishing, cutting lumber on the sawmill with his brother and being in the outdoors. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Jane Marten, Mattoon; two sons, Dennis (Julie) Marten, Hortonville, and Doug Marten, Freedom; four grandchildren, Kendra (Brad) Marten, Jenna Marten, Travis Marten and Tyler (Mackenzie) Marten; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Emmett Marten; one brother, Bill (Gail) Marten, Mattoon; and two sisters, Vera (James) Williams, Mattoon, and Linda (Butch) Lundin, Muskego. He is also survived by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church, Mattoon. The Rev. Dean Bertsch will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Township of Hutchins, Shawano County. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
