To the editor:
Recently I had the chance to catch up on some newspapers, including a recent Hawks Post from Shawano Community High School. In it, I read an article from a student writer who shared his thoughts on the costs of Hawks Hockey and wished for additional support from the Shawano Athletic Booster Club.
While I very much appreciate his concern of costs and need for support from donors, I felt it necessary to clarify and correct some of his points. The Booster Club, from the beginning, has been a tremendous “friend” to Hawks Hockey. Before we were even officially a team, the club stepped up and helped us purchase used lockers so we could create a locker room that our skaters had never before had.
Regularly, my husband and I were asked by booster board members if the team needed anything and to write it up if they did. They helped us with nets and pucks, among other thing, and just this season purchased warm-up suits for the team.
I am thankful for the relationship Hawks Hockey has with the booster club, especially since we are a 100 percent self-funded sport and rely heavily on fundraising efforts simply to allow our high school skaters to represent their school, playing the sport they love.
On April 11, the Shawano Athletic Booster Club will hold its annual spring jamboree. It is a fun and casual event with great food and super prizes! The funds are used to continue to support the many programs and athletes who are part of Hawks athletics. I encourage you to become a booster member and, if you are able, to attend the jamboree. You will not be disappointed!
On behalf of all the parents whose kids have benefited from the generosity of the booster club, thank you to the board and committee members who so tirelessly volunteer their time and talents. Their encouragement and financial support of Hawks athletics have made many wishes come true.
Go Hawks!
