Bonduel school tax levy down

Taxpayers in the Bonduel School District got a little good news this week. Property owners in the district can expect to pay a bit less in school taxes than had been expected when voters approved the tax levy in August; though it will still be more than they paid last year. The Bonduel School Board Monday certified a tax levy of $4.41 million; an increase of about $220,000 over last year, but about $60,000 less than the $4.47 million expected at the annual meeting. Most of that is due to an increase in state aid. Superintendent Peter Behnke said the district will get about $45,000 more in state aid than anticipated. There was further good news on the property values front, with the school district’s equalized valuation increasing by about $10 million, or roughly 2.4 percent. That will mean a tax rate also lower than expected in August, when school officials were projecting a rate of $10.33 per $1,000 of equalized valuation. Instead, the new levy figure combined with higher property values means a tax rate of $9.92 per $1,000. Last year’s equalized tax rate was $9.50 per $1,000. That could vary by municipality, however, because municipalities figure the tax bills based on assessed valuation. In addition to the increase in state aid, the district’s budget is benefiting from fewer than anticipated students leaving the district through open enrollment. Behnke said 85 district students are enrolling elsewhere instead of the 115 the district was projecting. On the down side, however, the district has a smaller student body this year. According to the annual third Friday count, the district had 840 students compared to 852 last year.
