Junior Taylor Weier had a double-double, senior Lexi Reinke scored 13 second-half points, and the Bonduel High School girls basketball team beat Iola-Scandinavia 53-27 to open Central Wisconsin Conference-8 play Tuesday in Bonduel.
Bonduel (5-0, 1-0 CWC-8) opened the game with a 9-2 run, but couldn’t pull away from Iola-Scandinavia (3-2, 0-1 CWC-8) until the second half.
The Bears, on a five-game winning streak to open the season, took a commanding lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunderbirds 18-2 with defensive adjustments.
“We’ve had some defensive stands like that,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said. “We can do it every quarter if we just put our minds to it. At halftime, we had a chat about who was helping and where they needed to go, and our defense came around and stopped them.”
The Bonduel defense would only allow seven second half points.
“To go from a 14-point quarter to hold them to just seven the next half, that was a nice job defensively by all the girls,” Dowden said.
Weier, a 6-foot forward, scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, where she was active under the basket with 13 rebounds.
“We just need her to keep finishing,” Dowden said. “She had 13 rebounds, and I keep teasing her that she puts it up and misses on purpose so she can put it back in. She was in position for the rebounds. She did a nice job. … It’s real nice to see her coming around.”
Weier had a foot injury right before Thanksgiving, but used the two weeks off to get healed.
Reinke, a 5-10 senior, got hot in the second half for Bonduel, scoring all 13 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers.
“She took it upon herself to make sure she was shooting, instead of worrying about giving it to somebody else,” Dowden said. “She took the role on. … She stepped up for us.”
Brooke Phillips, a 5-8 senior guard, led Iola-Scandinavia with 13 points. She scored nine points in the first half but was held to just four in the second half.
In junior varsity action, Bonduel won 46-22. Brittany Wudtke scored 21 points and seven rebounds for the Bears.
