Three junior contestants and three senior contestants will compete for the title of Fairest of the Fair on Saturday, May 16, at Gillett High School. A reception open to the public will begin at 2:30 p.m., with the final judging at 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
Senior contestants are Jenna Herzog, Sonja Sanford and Priscilla VanDenElzen; juniors are Amber Jo Farrar, Macy Franti and Tani Lucht.
Herzog is the daughter of Jon and Mary Herzog, of Gillett. She is a graduate of Gillett High School and has recently completed a church mission trip overseas. She plans to obtain an associate degree in health and wellness. She works at her parents’ farm and is a cashier at Kohl’s. At the Oconto County Fair, Jenna has shown cattle and handmade quilts. She said becoming the Fairest of the Fair would be a great opportunity to expand her love of the fair. Her parents are her sponsor.
Sanford is the daughter of Rodney and Connie Gretzon, of Pound. She will graduate this year from Oconto Falls High School and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Marinette in the fall, then transfer to UW-River Falls to complete programming to become a veterinarian. She waitresses at Station House Family Restaurant in Coleman. Sanford said she would love to become the next Fairest of the Fair to be a part of the amazing community event. She is sponsored by Mary Shomin and the Coach Light Motel of Oconto Falls.
VanDenElzen is the daughter of Michael and Charlene VanDenElzen, of Suring. She is enrolled at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and works for Interim Healthcare in Green Bay. She has participated in 4-H throughout her life and volunteered for the Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm. At the Oconto County Fair, she has shown cattle, chickens and horses. She said she would like to be Fairest of the Fair so she can be a part of the dedicated team that plans and promotes the fair. She is sponsored by Red Maple Country Club and Frostville Ranch and Renovate of Suring.
Farrar is the daughter of Lori Schuettpelz, of Little Suamico. She attends Pulaski Community Middle School. She is active in 4-H, volunteers for Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm, helps at the 4-H food stand, and shows her horse, small animals and plants at the fair. She said she would like to be Junior Fairest of the Fair because she is a great helper and leader who has a great love for the fair. Her sponsor is Troy Wilson of Match Realty.
Franti is the daughter of Danyell and Erin Franti, of Gillett. She attends Gillett Elementary School. She has been a part of Ag Olympics and 4-H and has entered projects at the Oconto County Fair. She would like to be Junior Fairest of the Fair so she can be a role model for younger kids, like the current Senior and Junior Fairest of the Fair have been for her. She is sponsored by her parents.
Lucht is the daughter of Darrell and Lisa Lucht, of Gillett. She attends Gillett Elementary School. She is involved with Ruby’s Pantry, her church, working at the 4-H food stand and bringing projects to the fair. She said that it would be an honor to be Junior Fairest of the Fair so she can help improve the community. She is sponsored by Sandbox Daycare of Gillett.
The contestants will be judged on their interview skills, ability to answer impromptu questions, public speaking, professionalism, enthusiasm and their knowledge of the fair.
The winners will represent the Oconto County Fair throughout the year and serve as hostesses at the 2015 fair from Aug. 20-23.
