Most of the original organizers of the annual Ball of the Badges have formed a new nonprofit organization to keep the local celebration of first responders going strong.

The delivery app company DoorDash reported spending nearly $2 million in the first half of 2025 lobbying the Wisconsin Legislature, according to mandatory filings with the state, to pass a bill that would ban drivers from being classified as employees, thus blocking their ability to receive the corresponding benefits.

An experiment with GovAI will end later this month for Shawano County.

Matt Hietpas, technology services director, said after using the program since January, the county won’t renew its contract for another six months.

Data centers are physical facilities that can house thousands of computer servers and networking equipment. They act as the backbone of the digital world, used to store, process and manage massive volumes of data for everything from cloud computing and video streaming to enterprise operations and artificial intelligence.

Members of the Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee voted unanimously June 3 to halt development of data centers for the next 12 months.
