A town of Lessor woman is out nearly $4,000 after falling victim to a telephone scam this week.
The 41-year-old woman was contacted by a man on Wednesday who told her that her grandson was in custody in Green Bay after a traffic accident. She was given a number to call to talk with an attorney supposedly involved in the case.
The attorney told her she needed to wire $2,000 to a woman in Lebanon, which she did.
She was contacted again on Thursday by the attorney who said another person from the supposed accident was now also injured and another $1,950 needed to be wired before her grandson could be released.
The woman wired the money via Western Union, this time to a man in Lebanon.
She reported the incident to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday after making contact with her grandson and learning the story was not true.
