A Manitowoc woman was caught allegedly trying to steal a second vehicle after the first one she allegedly stole ended up in a ditch in the town of Hutchins on Saturday, according to a criminal complaint filed this week.
April M. Huchthausen, 26, was arrested after Shawano County deputies responded about 6 a.m. to a complaint of a suspicious woman pounding on a door at a residence on County Road D.
The woman stated she was looking for someone named Scott, but the homeowner advised that nobody by the name of Scott resided there and asked her to leave.
When deputies arrived they found an unoccupied four-door Saturn that appeared to have backed into a ditch in front of the residence. Parked just southwest of the residence was a Chevrolet Trailblazer occupied by Huchthausen, according to the criminal complaint.
The complaint states Huchthausen was warming the vehicle up and defrosting the windshield when deputies arrives. She told deputies she lived at the residence and initially gave a false name, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, the vehicle belonged to the homeowner at the residence and the vehicle found in the ditch had been stolen earlier that day from Otto’s Garage in Mattoon.
Huchthausen, who was out on bond in a Manitowoc County case at the time, was charged with a felony count of bail jumping. She could face six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if found guilty.
She is also charged with misdemeanor counts of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, and attempting to operate a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, as well as obstructing an officer.
Huchthausen waived a preliminary hearing on the charges Wednesday in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court and entered a plea of not guilty. She is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Jan. 29.
