Wisconsin Waterfowl Association received a $1,250 Green Gift from Cellcom at a presentation Oct. 27 at its Abrams site.
The gift will support the construction of new accessible blinds with ramps at the group’s Abrams property.
The Wisconsin Waterfowl Association works to further restoration and conservation of the state’s waterfowl and wetland resources and implement education for Wisconsin youth that heightens awareness about the resources. The group continues work on its Abrams property, 190 acres open to the public for hunting and wildlife viewing that includes a number of features for hunters with disabilities.
“The opportunity to have a large property open to the public which features access for differently abled persons within a short drive of a large metropolitan area is very unique,” said Don Kirby, executive director of the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association. “The Abrams property is already used by a variety of students and community members, and wheelchair-accessible trails provide additional opportunities for those who may not get to explore the outdoors otherwise.”
A total of $34,675 was given out to 31 green organizations in Cellcom’s service area through the 2015 Green Gifts program.
Since 2004 Cellcom has offered a cell phone recycling program in which customers bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom has always donated this money back to local nonprofit groups.
In 2010, Cellcom launched the Green Gift program, donating their recycling funds to green nonprofit initiatives in an effort to complete the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally conscious and donating their devices.
Other area recipients of Green Gifts included Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust - Oconto Preserve and Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya.
