Walter R. Grunewald, 87, of Caroline, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Shawano Medical Center. “Wally” was born on May 13, 1926, in the Township of Grant, Shawano County, the son of the late Gustave and Lydia (Wissmann) Grunewald Sr.
On June 30, 1945, Wally was united in marriage to Betty Redmann at Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline. The couple lived in the Township of Grant all of their married life. Betty preceded her husband in death on Jan. 29, 2006, after 60 years of marriage. Wally worked at the F. R. Buss Cheese Factory, Caroline, where he was a truck driver, cheese and butter maker until retirement. He also drove school bus for the Marion School District while working at the cheese factory. His hobbies included hunting, especially with a bow, fishing, bear hunting, gardening, beekeeping and baseball. He was instrumental in organizing the Caroline Little League. He was a man of many talents, which included carpentry, plumbing and brick laying. Wally was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline, where he had served on council. He also was a past volunteer for the Caroline Fire Department, which he had served as assistant fire chief, a past member of the Caroline Conservation Club, a past charter member of the Marion Bow Hunters Club, and current member of the Bigfalls Bow Hunters and the Wisconsin Bow Hunters.
Survivors include his daughter, Lynn Grunewald, Caroline; his sons, Carl (Shirley) Grunewald, Caroline, and Gary Grunewald, Shawano; his grandchildren, Carrie (Ron) Faehling, Marion, Karen (Ryan Mijal) Grunewald and Kevin (Laurel) Grunewald, Clintonville; his great-grandchildren, Karlie and Jarren Faehling and Logan Grunewald; his sister, Burnett Hartwig, Clintonville; his brothers, Gustave Grunewald Jr., and Leonard (Ila) Grunewald, Caroline; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; his sister, Esther Jolitz; and two brothers, Robert and Gilbert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline, with the Rev. Craig Nehring officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Caroline. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory, Marion, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church until the time of the service.
