It took an extra period, but Oconto Falls High School junior Nathan Trepanier secured a Battle on the Bay title with a sudden victory over Sparta’s Hayden Krein on Saturday at Bay Port High School.
Trepanier earned a takedown with just seconds remaining in the period to win the 152-pound championship, 7-5.
“His never giving up, his heart, his hard work in the practice room, it all shows out on the mat,” Panthers head coach Marc Kinziger said.
Oconto Falls had four wrestlers take sixth place or better on the day, including a third-place finish from Mac Winkler at 182 pounds.
“I like where they are at,” Kinziger said. “I think we’ll come out of this pretty strong actually.”
Oconto Falls took 14th place in the 25-team tournament. North Eastern Conference foe Luxemburg-Casco won the meet.
The Panthers, who had a few wrestlers miss weight for the Battle on the Bay, have three more duels on Thursday and another duel on Tuesday in Bay Port.
“We are getting a big test really early in the season,” Kinziger said. “Quite frankly, I kind of like it like that simply because you get a gauge of where you have to be.”
