Trainer earns cancer certification

Janelle Derbique, the Bond Community Center’s personal trainer, earned her American College of Sports Medicine cancer exercise trainer certification in June. Derbique will lead the Bond Community Center’s cancer care team, providing training services for cancer clients. The cancer care program is a part of Bellin Health’s Continuum of Care focus. After or during any treatment, physicians can refer patients to the Bond Community Center. Patients meet with a trainer for 30 minutes twice a week for six months. Throughout the six months, clients are assessed on maximum oxygen uptake, strength and flexibility. One of the benefits of the care team is that it creates an environment of communication and cooperation, Derbique said in a statement, because physicians work with fitness professionals on the clients’ behalf. The goal of the care team is to help clients transition to lifelong, independent wellness through corrective exercise, Derbique said.
