Three Keshena teens were taken into custody late Monday for their alleged part in a weekend vandalism spree that damaged more than 30 vehicles in Shawano.
Police began getting calls in the early morning hours Sunday from residents discovering shattered windows on their vehicles.
Calls continued to come in throughout the day Sunday and again on Monday. Police investigating those incidents found other damaged vehicles that had not been reported yet. At one point, an officer had to go back to the department to pick up more restitution forms.
There were nine reports of vehicle windows shot out on Sunday and 23 on Monday.
The damage was spread around the city, though most incidents were on the west side of town, stretching from the north side as far south as the 1200 block. In addition to the vehicles, Book World, at 134 S. Main St., reported that someone had shot a hole through the store’s front window.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, according to a Police Department news release, Officer Jeff Lenzner noticed a vehicle acting suspiciously on South Cleveland Street. Lenzner, who was on foot at the time investigating another incident, returned to his squad, but was unable to locate the vehicle.
Officers started looking for the vehicle with the assistance of Shawano County sheriff’s deputies.
A short time later, deputies spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop just north of the city. The vehicle was occupied by three juveniles who police said admitted to the vandalism spree. A number of BB guns were recovered from the vehicle, according to police.
A 17-year-old male was referred to the district attorney’s office for charges. The other males — ages 14 and 15 — were referred to juvenile court.
Police do not yet have a total of the estimated damages caused by the vandalism spree, but said they expect the amount to be substantial.
