Suring Elementary School will provide after-school enrichment activities for youth, thanks to a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant of $80,000.
According to Suring School officials, the school will offer after-school enrichment activities and homework help for students in preschool to eighth grade beginning Sept. 15.
The program, still under development, is slated to run Monday through Thursday and involve community organizations and school staff members.
Students at 55 sites around Wisconsin will have opportunities to improve their math and reading, participate in academic enrichment programs, and develop their athletic and social skills through programming funded by the Community Learning Center grants.
Funding was awarded to programs that serve schools with at least 40 percent or more of enrolled students at or below the poverty level and a high percentage of students struggling academically.
During the 2012-13 school year, 39,794 students were served by Wisconsin’s CLC grant-funded programs. Of those served, 73 percent demonstrated significant improvement in math, reading or both, according to the DPI. In addition, students have demonstrated an increased commitment and engagement to school through improved attendance, better classroom engagement and decreased behavioral problems.
Research also shows that well-designed after-school programs help reduce youth crime, rates of teen pregnancy and other risky behaviors. They also assist parents in providing quality care for their children during non-school hours.
Community Learning Centers are also a bridge between schools and communities. More than 1,380 organizations worked with schools during the 2012-13 school year to support after-school programs and contributed more than $3.37 million in financial support and services.
