The Charles F. Suring family gathered June 13 for a reunion. Reunions have been held every two years since 1985. Six of the eight children of Charles and Mary (Firgens) Suring attended.
Curtis Suring, of Suring, and Bette (Suring) Streu, of Green Bay, were the host families. They selected Red Maple Golf Course in Suring for the site of the reunion.
Charles Suring is the third generation of the original Suring family, Johann and Louise Suring, who emigrated from Isabella, Kreis County, Labischin, Posen, Prussia. Labischin is where the church records are found.
There were six children born to Johann and Louise (Ristau) Suring. Julius and Edward were born in Prussia, and Ludwig (Louis), Gustav, William and Mary were born at Princeton in Green Lake County. William moved to Iowa. The other five children and their mother, Louise, moved to Belle Plaine in Shawano County. After the five children married, they moved to other locations in Wisconsin.
Louis found his mate, Wilhelmina Zahn, and after they married moved to the town of How in Oconto County. They lived in Hayes and owned and operated a furniture store. When the Evangelical United Brethren congregation decided to build a church in Hayes, Louis donated the land. Later they bought a farm on Elm Road in How.
Charles Suring is the oldest son of Louis and Willhelmina (Zahn) Suring. Charles married Mary Firgens on Oct. 25, 1902. Charles worked in the logging camps full time until the couple’s fourth child was born. Then Mary wanted him to buy her a farm. From that time on he farmed and worked in the logging camps in the winter. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October 1952 with all eight of their children present.
This year’s celebration brought families from Frederic, Madison, Janesville, Green Bay, Cedarburg, Gillett, Suring, Thief River Falls, Minnesota and Paisley, Florida.
