Believe it or not, the calendar is about to turn to July, with the Fourth of July right around the corner. Where did June go? I have been wondering why May seemed to drag by for me, but June has flown past so fast that it is hard to believe. Sure, there is different work with the yard needing attention, and there has already been a family reunion. The weather has been wet, sometimes cool and wet, and other times humid and wet. Rain has been in the forecast on a daily basis, and farmers are having a hard time getting their hay harvested. As a teenager, I can remember the Fourth of July and usually spending the day in the hay field, and then spending the night either at a polka dance or at fireworks somewhere. At that age, I could keep going all day and half the night before my bed started calling. With all the wet and stormy weather we have been having, it seems our small rural communities are still celebrating their events with gusto. Somehow people have simply gone on between the raindrops. The Fourth of July celebrations will be no different. Many communities in the Shawano area have their regular festivities going on and I hope many of you will get involved with them, either as volunteers or participants. For my hometown, Tigerton, the Main Street program has had a Fourth of July Block Party for several years. This year it will be held in the Community Park, rather than the street in front of the old restored Village Hall. The reason for the change was weather, as last year is was so hot that people were not able to stick around, and two years ago it was raining. Plans include the popular silent auction, music, food and games. This year, it will be under the shelter in the park, so it won’t matter what the weather provides. Summer is marching past too quickly for us all. It is something that we wait for all through the winter and the, at times, never-ending spring. Once summer hits, we are so busy with the yard, vacations, going to different activities, that it is hard to catch up with it all. There are a few things that occur each year, and that turn our mind to thinking that things are moving way too fast. The first of the year is Memorial Day, when the days are filled with going up north, graduation parties and weddings. Next is the Fourth of July, when we tend to panic, thinking that summer is waning fast and we have to rush to do all the things we have planned to do. I have a couple of short trips I would like to do this summer; one is to spend some time down in southern Wisconsin, visiting my aunts. The other is to keep a promise to a friend and spend some time up north at Bayfield. We decided to do this about six years ago, so it is time to get it done. Of course, the next big change comes with Labor Day, the Shawano County Fair,and school starting again. As I grow older, the years seem to be speeding past, faster and faster.
